Re-Focusing My Goals

The Live Fit program is awesome, and is always challenging me. This week we have upped the ante again by increasing the number of sets, sticking to a calorie range based on the workout and my goal weight, and I am increasing the weight that I am lifting. Since my caloric intake is based on my goal weight, I am only weighing myself weekly just to see what the scale says. However I’m not discouraged if I only lose 1lb or so because that’s 1lb that I will never gain back.

I am starting to appreciate the inches loss over the weight loss. I am noticing that I look smaller, and that my clothes are fitting me better, while the scale is only creeping slowly down toward my goal. I am starting to think that I will probably reach my aesthetic goal before my weight/scale goal. So my focus is not on the scale so much, even though deep down inside I am hoping to lose more weight soon.

I have re-focused my goals. Up to this point my goal has been to get down to 140lbs, and enter a bikini contest sometime next year. The Live Fit program has really helped improved my overall strength and endurance. I am able to perform single leg squats with better form, and jack-knife crunches slightly better. Now that I am more than half way through the program, I am definitely looking ahead, and ready to take my journey to the next level.

After I finish the Live Fit program, I am going to do P90X. So my new goals are to complete the Live Fit program, and then move right into P90X. After the P90X program my goal is to do another fitness program. By the time I complete my goals, I should be ready to get a personal trainer, and start getting ready for my bikini contest. I am not setting any limitations on myself.

Epiphany Moment: While sitting in Atlanta traffic I had this epiphany. Many people never reach their goals in life because they set too many limitations on themselves. No matter your dream, no matter how big, visualize yourself doing whatever it is you want to do. Then pray about it. Then research the necessary steps you need to take to accomplish your goal. After you’ve done your homework, get moving towards your dream. Do whatever you have to do to make it happen, and make excuses on behalf of your goal and never against it. Understand that it won’t be easy because there are people around you that don’t want to see you happy. You will have to push through negativity, and convince yourself that you are a champion. Recognize that each accomplishment you’ve made towards your goal is a sign that your dream really is your destiny. Make sure to let no person or circumstance convince you otherwise. Be tough, be confident, and set no limits.

Remember Back In the Day?

I have no idea why I’m making that face, or why I’m reading the newspaper instead of playing outside like a normal kid! Check out that hairstyle.

Do you remember how long and thick your hair was before you got your first relaxer? My pig tails were super thick! I can remember my mother washing my hair about every two weeks and blow-drying my hair straight. Sometimes she would hot comb it, and oil my scalp with Blue Magic or African Pride hair grease. Then she would style my hair with bows and barrettes, and I would wear that hairstyle for about two weeks. Sometimes she would braid it, but all the time; she left my hair in whatever hairstyle she did for about 2-3 weeks. The only thing she would do is tidy up that hair style and make sure it was still detangled.

Somewhere between me having long healthy natural hair as a child to about 6 years ago I went crazy and got a perm, got glue in weaves, and really screwed up my hair. I did not treat my hair very well. Now that I am rekindling my love and acceptance for who I am as an individual, I am careful about how I treat my hair. When I first went natural in 2006, I took a lot of advice from people about how to grow my hair. I believe that because I didn’t know too much about my hair, I took a lot of advice from people who had me doing too much extra stuff to my hair that was unnecessary and costly. In 2012, I realized that my hair does not need my hands to help it grow. As long as I keep my hair and scalp clean and moisturized my hair will grow at its own unique rate of growth.

Now that I am 29 years old, I am taking care of my hair the way my mother used to back in the day. I wash it every 2-3 weeks with Design Essentials Natural Curls Sulfate-free shampoo and steam condition it with the follow-up conditioner. I spray Design Essentials Blow-dry and leave-in conditioner spray in my hair, detangle with a Denman brush, and blow-dry my hair straight. I never allow my hair to air dry because it causes too many knots and makes it harder to detangle which promotes hair breakage. I press out my edges with a ceramic flat iron once it’s blown out straight. I only wear my whole head pressed straight if I go to my beautician because I feel I use too much heat when I try to press it straight myself. When I try to press my hair myself it never comes out looking as straight as when my beautician does it. After I blowout my hair I moisturize it with an organic virgin coconut oil that I get from the Farmers Market and braid it. The next morning when I unbraid my hair, my hair is straighter than when I blowdryed it the day before. I style it, and for 2-3 weeks I will not use heat on my hair. I re-oil my scalp when I feel it’s necessary, and re-press my edges when necessary, but I don’t use heat throughout my hair until it’s time to wash it again.  I also do roller sets using flexi-rods, a twist and lock gel, and a hooded dryer. I set and dry the curls under a hooded dryer for about an hour, and oil my scalp once the process is complete with my Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.

In this post, I have mentioned maybe five hair products that I use. Only one of those five products I use almost daily. My hair regimen is kept simple and it works well for me. I hope that this post reminds someone how simple hair care used to be back in the day.  I am all about maintaining hair growth without the over dependency of a ton of expensive hair products.

Clean Eating Grocery List

Ezekiel 4:9 Wrap with boiled chicken, tomato, cucumber, light mayo, mustard, chipotle seasoning, and avocado

The first tip I have for those who are not sure where to start when it comes to clean eating is to dedicate a day for cleaning out your pantry, refrigerator, freezer, and any other place you store food such as you desk drawer at work. What I would like for you to do is look at the ingredients in the foods. You may notice that you can’t pronounce any of the ingredients in the product that you are looking at. I want you to place that item into a pile to give to any local food drive of your choice. Here are the top five ingredients that will require an automatic toss into that pile for your local food drive:

1. Partially Hydrogenated Oil (Palm, Soy, etc…)

2. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

3. Benzoate Preservatives (BHT, BHA, TBHQ)

4. Artificial Colors

5. Sodium nitrite

The list of ingredients in the foods you eat should read like a recipe. Once you have “cleaned house”, replace the items with more whole, natural foods. Foods that don’t require a list of nutrition facts are the best. Those would include your foods from the perimeter of the grocery store such as produce and meats, although you should limit the amount of factory produced meats that you consume. Ultimately, you will want to purchase organic meats that come from animals raised on a farm, not in a factory.

Below is a link to a PDF. file for my grocery list. It is broken down by store and aisles! Frozen meats are in case of  an emergency. I typically purchase everything fresh and at the Farmers Market. You can boil some of your meats for a moment to see the fat, added oils, and preservatives float to the top of the water. Then rinse and prepare your meats as usual. Since I started eating clean in September 2012, I find myself shopping at Wal-Mart, the Farmers Market, Kroger, and local Health Food stores. I make it a point to shop at other places other than Wal-Mart to support local businesses.

Fighting Frustrations

I am starting to get a grasp on why I have been so frustrated since starting Phase 2 of the Live Fit program. I cannot perform many of the exercises with as clean of a form as I would like. As much as I would like to lift heavier and increase my strength, I just can’t do it right now without losing form. Some of the exercises I can barely do at all. For instance, those jack-knife crunches! Those have to be the worst abdominal exercises Jamie Eason could have chosen for her program. Pull-ups? I can barely do those either. Push-ups? Can’t stand them! So when I saw I had to do side-to-side pushups I was like, “What the hell?” I must stick with this program because these are the exercises that I never did prior to starting the program, and I am sure they will be preparing me for Phase 3. I can’t let the fact that I can barely do them make me quit the whole program. I have to keep trying, and do what number of reps I can. The program isn’t strict. I make it flexible according to my abilities.

I love clean eating so that is far from my issue with this program. The problem is sometimes I hate going to the gym to workout. I really despise feeling sore all the time and limping around, and barely being able to do my hair because my arms are sore. I am always stretching too so that is not the problem. I stretch during my workout, I stretch when I stand in lines, I stretch at my desk at work, I stretch after using the bathroom, and I am still always sore. Maybe I’m just having a moment! I drink those protein shakes right after my workout which helps but it does not eliminate the soreness completely. I am fighting through being frustrated at not being able to perform some of the exercises with cleaner form. Next week I start calorie counting, and really start burning fat so I’m going to enjoy this week before the fire really gets turned up. Aside from all the frustrations, I’m now half-way through the program and I feel good about what I’ve accomplished thus far. I’ve lost an additional pound which means I’ve lost 6lbs total on the program.

Epiphany Moment: Your rest is just as much of a priority as working out, eating clean, and supplementation. I definitely notice a major difference in my performance when I am well rested. I highly recommend anyone reading this to make sleep a priority.
